The diode is in the wire from the stator. There are two wires one to the lights one to charge. They travel in a plastic sleeve from the engine to a connector. The diode is back inside that sleeve (see pic) You should have 14.5 or more volts when running. Solenoid has nothing to do with this issue.

The 111216 switch is for battery ignition used on the tractor models with the Onan engine. The 310-8 shares a parts list with the Onan powered tractors so both part numbers show up. Once you have determined which switch is the culprit, hook the other switch back up and make sure it still works. Then get some new switches and correct the problem properly.
